It was a bit of a strange week for weather on Tenerife. Although the weather more or less followed the pattern predicted by the weather forecasters, Tuesday brought a bit of a surprise and a very late yellow alert warning for high winds – so late that it wasn’t issued until a couple of hours after it was clear that parts of the island were experiencing unusual weather.

There had been some very light and very short-lived rain across Tenerife during the afternoon. By late early evening high winds had developed in the east and south of the island resulting in some damage in Santa Cruz and reports of sun beds being blown across the beach in Costa Adeje. Just to show how different the weather can be around the island, there was hardly a breath of wind on the north coast. However, the north did experience rain during the night and a big firework display in La Laguna had to be postponed. Normally by this time of year the rain is welcome, but this was what we call ‘dirty rain’ here as it’s full of sand from the Sahara.

By Wednesday it was red hot and sunny and the weather returned to normal with temperatures in the upper 20s and plenty of sunshine on the coasts.

The Weather in Tenerife 20th to 26th September

Weather in South Tenerife –  A sunny start to Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be cloudy with a 65% chance of rain on Wednesday. Thursday should be a mix of sun and cloud and from Friday to Saturday it should be sunny. Average temperatures will be around 27C.

Weather in North Tenerife –  Like the south it’s a sunny start to Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be cloudy with a 65% chance of rain on Wednesday. Thursday & Saturday should be a mix of sun and cloud and Friday and Saturday should be sunny. Average temperatures will be around 27C.

Weather in East Tenerife
– Exactly the same as the north. Again the east is predicted to be the hottest part of the island with temperatures averaging 30C.

Weather in South West Tenerife – Exact same forecast as the south, with temperatures being around 26-27C all week.

Weather in the Mount Teide Crater – A mixed week in the crater. Sunny Monday; sun and cloud Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday and cloudy with light rain on Thursday. Temperatures will be around 16C in the crater and 5C at the summit.
It’s predicted to be another windy week at the summit of Mount Teide especially, like last week, on Thursday afternoon when wind speeds are expected to reach 55kmh. If planning a trip on the cable car this week, check that it is operating before setting off.

Apart from the predicted rain on Wednesday there is also a slight chance of rain on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday all across Tenerife.

Looking at webcams around the island (Monday am) and checking the weather outside, it’s a lovely morning on Tenerife. There’s sunshine and blue skies across all of the island and Mount Teide, towering above the La Orotava Valley, is a sight to take the breath away.
