The ‘who’s who of the seasons’ comment about last week’s weather on Tenerife turned out to be a bit of an understatement. As predicted the week saw a mix of sunny and cloudy weather in the south with some rain whereas the north fared slightly better again in the sunshine stakes. The weekend ended with a red level weather alert for hurricane force winds at high altitudes and an orange level alert for winds of 100kph on the coasts and heavy rains in southern, eastern and western areas. Although the alert, starting on Sunday, was known about for a few days, a hot and sunny Saturday and Sunday in the north had some people questioning its accuracy. Freaky clouds and high winds by the end of the day helped convince them that the weather forecasters knew what they were talking about.

The week gets off to a wild start as a huge Atlantic storm passes over the Canary Islands on its way to Madeira and North Africa beyond. As hurricane force winds batter high areas of Tenerife, the coast will be lashed by gusts of up to 100kph on Monday with the south and south west on a weather alert for heavy rain and high seas as well on Monday. In the north the alert is for wind and choppy seas. The situation should calm down by midnight on Monday although the island will remain on a yellow alert for wind and rough seas during Tuesday. The rest of the week is much calmer although there will be rain showers in places throughout the week. Best for sunshine this week is the north and east where nearly every day will enjoy sunshine whilst the south and south west will stay cloudy during the first half of the week with the second half of the week being a  mix of cloud and sun.

Weather in South Tenerife –  The inclement weather continues this week with an orange level alert for high winds and a yellow alert for rain and high seas. The alert changes to yellow for strong winds and high seas on Tuesday. By Wednesday things will have completely calmed down although it will be a cloudy day with a 40% chance of rain. Thursday to the end of the week will see a mix of cloud and sun with a 30-35% possibility of rain on Thursday and Friday. It will be warm though with temperatures ranging between 19 and 23C.

Weather in North Tenerife – The situation is slightly better in the north with an orange alert for wind and a yellow alert for high seas on Monday but no alerts for rain, although rain will probably fall at some point. On Tuesday there is a yellow level alert for high winds and choppy seas. Apart from Saturday, which will be cloudy, it should be quite a sunny week in the north with only a 5-25% chance of rain between Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will range from 17-22C.

Weather in East Tenerife –  Again Santa Cruz is looking like a good prospect for sunny weather this week with less cloud about throughout the week than in other parts. Like everywhere else, the east is affected by weather alerts on Monday and Tuesday (same as in the north) but after that it will be mainly sunny with a few clouds about. Saturday will be cloudy. There’s a 5-15% chance of rain on Wednesday Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will stay around 19-22C in the shade.

Weather in South West Tenerife –  The weather alerts in the south west mirror those in the south of Tenerife with wind, rain and high seas today and wind and high seas tomorrow. Like the south it will remain mainly cloudy until Thursday. For the rest of the week there will be a mix of cloud and sun. There’s a 5-40% chance of rain between Wednesday and Friday with temperatures hovering between 21 and 24C.

Weather in the Mount Teide Crater – After snow, rain, cloud and high winds on Monday, the sun will return to Mount Teide and Teide National Park from Tuesday onwards. Forget travelling to the cable car until Wednesday as seriously high winds will keep the cable cars safely locked away at least until then. In fact high winds on the summit all this week may keep the cars out of action until Saturday so check before travelling. Temperatures in the crater will vary between 5 and 14C, whilst on the summit they will be between 1C and a very chilly -6C.
