Walking is a great way of keeping the weight down, especially at this time of year when Christmas goodies have proven too much of a temptation.

But how about walks that have a gastronomic focus?

Delicatesen 2012 is a tasty collaboration between El Cárdon, Tenerife’s outdoor specialists, various councils and local businesses that involves themed walks on Tenerife which are connected to culinary traditions on the island.

Delicatesen 2012 walks will include routes that take walkers to locations where they can sample local product with almonds, figs and sweet potatoes amongst others.

The programme pulls on its boots on 29th January with the almond blossom walk in Santiago del Teide.

February’s route takes in Teno with goats’ cheese and wine as the goodies to try.

In March, Garachico provides the routes with some sinfully seductive sweets from the wonderful El Aderno.

April follows in the footsteps of Alexander von Humboldt to La Orotava and wines accompanied by fig chocolate.

For May Delicatesen 2012 heads above the clouds to Mount Teide where a selection of flavoured candy and cakes add sweetness to the dramatic landscape.

In June it’s Teide again for tajinaste in bloom and cinnamon and almond biscuits.

Hot July sees a descent into the Masca Barranco and delicacies made from Canarian palms.

An ideal way to stay cool in August is a night under the stars with chocs and biccies provided by El Aderno.

The September scene is in the Anaga Mountains with sweet pastries and local liqueurs.

Delicatesen heads south in October to explore the Malpaís de Rasca and appropriately, given the location, almond galletas (biscuits).

In November it has to be wine and chestnuts for San Andrés – this time in Buenavista del Norte.

And Delicatesen 2012 ends in December with the routes around Los Silos ending at the Storytelling Festival and some sweet buñuelos de viento (light fried doughnut type balls).

It costs between €25 and €30 to join each walk and although guides are Spanish speaking, other languages can be arranged.

See the website for full details of all the walks. Unfortunately the English translation option on the site doesn’t work very well.
